Understanding the Connection Between Emotions and Voice
-Voice & Emotions : The voice is not just a physical instrument but also a reflection of emotional states. Emotions can manifest in the voice through changes in pitch, volume, tone, quality as well as quantity.
- Stress and Tension: High levels of stress and anxiety can lead to physical tension in the vocal cords and surrounding muscles, resulting in a strained or unsteady voice.
- Emotional Expression: Unresolved emotional issues can lead to difficulties in expressing oneself vocally, causing vocal strain or inhibition.
Emotional Impacts on the Voice:
Judgements that we believe are coming from outside of us constricts the voice and shuts it down.
Any kind of sadness or depression makes the voice flat lacking energy and vitality.
Excessive anger or passion in the voice results in the voice sounding aggressive which creates a harsh tone that is unhealthy.
Lack of confidence creates a tone that is unsure and holds back which can lead to having a block in the voice.
This is just but a few emotions and their impact on the sound of the voice.
Your Voice Connection…
Everything that is alive within you can move through the sound of the voice is we allow it to.
What is in the way of your voice?
Voice lessons are wonderful for enhancing your singing skills, moving energy, and relieving stress and tension. However, if you’re experiencing issues such as PTVD (Post-Traumatic Voice Disorder), performance anxiety, or even a physical condition like acid reflux, there may be deeper root causes that we can gently explore together to help you restore your voice and find healing.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of helping many singers recover from a variety of dis-eases, illnesses, and performance anxieties. My goal has always been to guide them in rediscovering their voices, whether that means stepping back onto the stage or finding their strength for everyday life.
To truly transform, we must have the willingness to break free from repeating old habits and the courage to explore our inner truths. This process can change everything. It begins with understanding that we are all energetic beings, and when this energy is blocked, it affects our voice.
The E-Motions: Energy-in-motion
While air is the physical element needed for voice production, emotions are what colour the voice with depth and authenticity. Emotions such as joy, sadness, anger, or love affect how we use our voice. They influence the voice in every way, from how loudly or softly we speak, how quickly or slowly we talk, and the tone and colour of the voice.
When we are emotionally engaged, our voice naturally reflects those feelings. We all know it when we hear a singer that is connected to his or her emotions and the voice is soaring freely with emotional expression.
Lost Connection
When we lose touch with our emotional connection, our voice can sometimes become flat, mechanical, and lacking in life. This disconnection happens when we are not in tune with our feelings or struggle to channel our emotions into our vocal expressions.
For example, a singer who is technically proficient but emotionally detached may hit every note perfectly but fail to move the audience. Similarly, a speaker who is uninterested or disengaged might present information in a way that feels monotonous and unconvincing.
The Re-Connection
Reconnecting with your emotions to sing with freedom and clarity involves a gentle process of uncovering what’s been buried under stress and tension. Through this therapy, we will work together to peel away these layers, allowing your true voice, your emotions, and your authentic self to emerge and shine.

Vocal Improvisation - Voice improvisation with a ‘no rules’ approach is a powerful way to release tension and improve your voice. An hour of improvising, movement, and breathing can lead to surprising progress. I’ve developed many creative techniques over the years to help voices open and heal.
If you’re ready to uncover your voice and explore your true expression, please reach out. I’m committed to helping you achieve the singing and self-expression you desire.
Authenticity - There can be many personalities in us that cover over our authenticity and prevent us from singing from our whole selves. I call these personalities Storefronts.
The Storefronts are attempting to protect the singer or speaker from too much vulnerability and so put a veil over the singer which protects the singer but also locks out the ability for them to be authentic and free.
I use the brilliant model of Voice Dialogue to discern who is covering over the singer and therefore their authentic connection to themselves, their voice and the connection to the audience.
Examples of the Storefront (also on the home page) - performer, seeker, silent one, chameleon. Also the larger identifications in ones life such as the - critic, judge, perfectionist, patriarch (shadow king) and many, many more.
The goal here is to see who it is that comes in-between you and your audience in order to protect you from something that is no longer happening.
Send me a message and let me know how I can help you with your voice.
A conversation with a student…
She said, why am I so afraid to sing?
I say I don't know, why are you so afraid?
She says actually I think I'm more afraid of what they'll say.
What will they say? She says, they’ll say that I shouldn't sing.
Why shouldn't you sing? She says because I'll disturb them.
I say how will you disturb them? She says they'll feel something they don't want to feel.
I say good you're on the right track then because that's what singers do.
